The wild about flowers crowd is clearly also wild about Harry as tickets have sold out at the Chelsea Flower Show due to this year’s Prince Harry garden. That’s 161,000 tickets booked due to the Harry effect.
The B & Q Sentebale Forget-me-not garden was commissioned to create awareness of Prince Harry’s charity for impoverished and vulnerable children in the African kingdom of Lesotho. It’s been designed by Jinny Blom working in collaboration with Prince Harry. She even sent him drawings during his last tour in Afghanistan as an Apache helicopter gunner.
Sentebale means Forget-me-not
Prince Harry’s charity Sentebale means ‘Forget-me-Not’ in Sesotho, the language spoken in Lesotho. It was founded in 2006 by Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho in memory of their mothers.
Blue forget-me-not flowers will be planted in the Prince Harry garden.
In memory of the Queen of Hearts
Another reminder of his late mother Diana, Princess of Wales, is the hearts and crowns stone terrace in the garden. The hearts and crowns motif was a favorite of Diana, who was also known as the Queen of Hearts.
“I hope my mother will be proud,” said Prince Harry in a speech last February for a Sentebale fundraiser.
The designer Jinny Blom based the hearts and crown on a pattern popular on Basotho blankets – part of the national costume in Lesotho – linking the country with Harry’s mother in the garden.
Importance of home in the Prince Harry garden
The garden will have a round pavilion and other features to evoke the landscape and huts of the landlocked country known as the Forgotten Kingdom. Blom said the round house “is a metaphor for our need for protection for family and home.”
The Prince Harry garden will be a touching tribute and memorial to his mother Diana, Princess of Wales. It will also symbolize his continuing her work with charities.
The main purpose of the garden will be to raise awareness of the prince’s charity. Sentebale supports vulnerable children in Lesotho, many of them orphans or affected by the country’s HIV epidemic. It works closely with grassroots organizations to give health care and education to transform the lives of its children in need.
On the last day of his current USA tour, Prince Harry will be pushing for more support and funds for his charity when he takes part in the Sentebale Royal Salute Polo Cup tournament in Greenwich, Connecticut. The flower show garden is supported by B & Q, a British home improvements company.
The Chelsea Flower Show will be celebrating its centenary when it opens the gates this year to members of the Royal Horticultural Society and the public on the grounds of the Chelsea Hospital in London. In my last post Flowers for Children I was inspired by the famous annual show.
The star attraction of this year’s show will be the Forget-me-not Prince Harry garden – and a likely appearance by Harry himself on the opening day May 21.
