Rain and roses

Climbing rose frames in valleyMy June garden is filled with roses – and raindrops. They’re climbing up frames, across a pergola and hugging every part of our wood deck. The non stop rain is getting too much for them. Every day I’m filling more vases with roses which means the inside of the house smells as sweet as the outdoors. But, like the English novelist and poet known by her pen name George Eliot, wouldn’t it be lovely if it rained roses instead?

You love the roses – so do I.  I wish
The sky would rain down roses, as they rain
From off the shaken bush. Why will it not?
Then all the valley would be pink and white
And soft to tread on. They would fall as light
As feathers, smelling sweet; and it would be
Like sleeping and like waking, all at once! ”

Now it’s time to say farewell to late June’s rain and roses and hope for sunshine the rest of the summer.

  1. The roses I have seen up and down the country seem to have been particularly good this year until the last couple of weeks of rain. Hopefully the worst of the weather is over so we can all enjoy the fantastic display.

  2. So many roses!! It seems to have been a good year for them actually, every rose bush I’ve seen has been heaving with flowers. Swooning over all the pastel colours.

Such beautiful roses and you’ve captured them in all the understated glory. Wouldn’t it just be lovely to rain roses instead? Gorgeous post #HDYGG

  4. Gorgeous pictures Kriss and lovely roses too. I could go with it raining roses, I’ve had enough of the wet rain… We saw so many roses in France on our trip, which quite surprised me – but a lovely and fragrant surprise 🙂

  5. Oh so very beautiful Kriss. I visited by mother today and her roses are taking a bit of a battering by the rain, so what one expects in July!
I’m with Gemma in swooning over the pastel colours xx

  6. That last photo with all the different textures, colours and sizes is lovley. We inherited a lot of roses in our garden, but have had to whittle them down over the years as some were planted in ridiculous locations like under a fir tree! We do however have one really prolific flowerer which gives us bright pink blooms most of the year!
