Rose bud so soon?

I saw a rose bud this morning! It’s March and the sunshine is out but I didn’t expect to see a new rose when I went for an early morning walk. Perhaps it knows that Mother’s Day in Britain is almost here?

“It will never rain roses.  When we want to have more roses, we must plant more roses.”  –  George Eliot

Leaves are beginning to sprout on a rose bush in front of our cottage but there were no signs yet of even the tiniest little rose bud. Actually I think March means I should check out all our rose bushes and see if they need a prune.

I then headed down to the edge of the woods where I know there is a rather untamed and exuberant wild rose bush. Some leaves were budding on its long rambling stems and there were still rose hips clinging to it after the winter. But no wild rose buds in sight.

I not only need to sort out the rose bushes in our front garden but also get some fresh roses for indoors. Perhaps I’m hoping for some fresh ones this Sunday… (Is that the second hint I’ve put in this post?)

White roses and window reflection

Wilting by the window and staring at their reflection, they reminded me of Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard.

All right, Mr. DeMille, I’m ready for my close-up. – Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard.

And they did get a close up shot showing them in their former glory when I first brought them home.

But I look forward to when the rose buds start appearing everywhere late spring and early summer and I can cut fresh ones from the garden to bring inside.

  1. A bud already? Roll on Spring and Summer!
I must plant some roses this year – I have extravagant wishes for some David Austin fancy ones! Hmmm I wonder if the MOthers Day fairy will spot my subtle hints too….
Thanks for joining in again Kriss and for the birthday wishes xx

  2. Beautiful pictures and ooh a rose already. I’ll have to check mine tomorrow for any signs. I bought a rose last week, just a bargain one, Peace and have potted it on and hope it will flourish for I do love roses. I’ve planted a rambling rose at the allotment shed too in the hope it will take over the roof of the shed and look pretty.

Hope you get your Mother’s Day blooms, I am hoping for pink tulips.

  3. Gorgeous Kriss. This just reminds me of the beauty we have to look forward to. There really are so many pleasures in nature during spring time, aren’t there?

  4. I saw two rose buds the other day but I think they could have been unopened buds from last year! I haven’t got roses at the moment in the garden so I’ll have to get my fix at my parents’ in a couple of weeks.

  5. Wow, that does seem early for the rosebuds. I noticed this week that my roses are very leafy but no buds yet. I’d moved them over the winter so was pleased to see they’d survived! And good work on getting the hints into this post, hope it’s fruitful (or should that be rose-ful) 🙂 #hdygg
